I think we can say the server has taken a bullet to the head recently and is currently in a coma on the edge of having its life support being turned off. This is evidently down to the bad decisions made recently.
BritishRP was a mistake. I openly said this before BritishRP was released and few listened and I'll say it again. Adding another server when the main server was only averaging 20-30 players a day was a crippling blow to the community, the decision was made presumably because Riverside was shut down and some thought we could get their playerbase. You should've known this was a mistake, after all the back and forth between the communities (which was almost entirely negative), it should've been apparent that they would not join XYZ. It is also apparent that there is no enthusiasm for the server and no clear direction the server is going in, this is either down to management not actually knowing the best course of action for the server, or that they have lost interest in server and have no intention of supporting it in the future. I have heard this may be down to the lack of income of PoliceRP and fair enough running a business that consistently makes a loss is not good, but in which case it is only fair to the community that we know that the server will be shut down. There is mass uncertainty around the future of the server, where people are concerned about their ranks but we are also held back from advancing on this server and others. We need to know if there is any hope of us continuing to actively play and progress on XYZ, because by the day we lose more and more confidence in the future of XYZ.
There are two ways I see this community moving forward:
- The community closes, with the main server staying open as a discord community.
- Management revives the community holding weekly events (on the roads like VIP convoys where criminals capture a VIP and get money for it, this will get all aspects of the server involved and will make events actually entertaining), creating new updates and content (perhaps bringing back the magical roadmap and making it public) and bringing life back into the community (this will inturn increase income made from the community). I personally suggest a "Community Representative" role being created, where a long standing (non-management) member of the community who has seen the server through its high and lows advises management on what the community actually thinks and wants. I believe this is necessary because management has always seemed distanced from the actual players ever since 2018, although this distance has increased since then.
This isn't meant to be a pure toxic rant, I have been here since 2018 and been a higher up in PD since 2018 aswell, I really love this community (hence why I am making this post and why I haven't left) and I do not want XYZ to die, but nor do I want to sit here for months not being able to move on because I do not know what the future of the server is.
I love you all <3
I mean it is a Do or Die indeed but it is not only XYZ that is dying Gmod as a game is dying as well
I completely agree with brexit here, the server needs to be focused on, britishrp while it was a good server was a devastating blow to our community, we need more events and rp related jobs and activities in game to boost it, as brexit said a community representitive or community manager role could be implemented to manage this sort of stuff, I'd hate to see XYZ die and I hope this thread is taken into account by management, the server is incredibly custom and unique it just needs more rp and some more enjoyable things, I think as brexit said rp events such as convoys would be nice, perhaps even being able to run a business that sells art or food and drink
I want to add some stuff to what Brexit said above. In my opinion, apart from small or big changes such as a map change or more VIP advantages, the server needs to be fun and it needs to provide a fun and unique experience that outlines it from other PoliceRP servers. I think that the main way to do this is by what Brexit also said above, new content and bigger and better events or (more inclined towards RP or a fun experience while also RP'ing).
Events should be more anticipated. Days before an event or the day before an event, there should be an @everyone ping for example saying that there will be a massive event and there will be massive rewards. Events should be more fun and have better rewards. Examples: Community Auction, VIP Escort, President meeting with other president. I think instead of you getting teleported to a special out of RP place, it should be you playing INSIDE of the RP. I don't think pinging is a bad idea because this way you get involved with the community and the community gets involved with the server more by knowing there's going to be a massive event and they're actually going to show up.
Police and sub-department activity. I believe activity should be more incentivized. You can achieve that by simply getting Police Board to be more involved with the community. For example: Massive Trainings like they used to happen back in Florida... , Massive convoys, more in game meetings (A meeting that is pinged in the discord and is previously planned). But for this you also need motivated higher-ups that actually go on the server instead of saying, fuck it let's play another game cause the server is dead. You need higher ups that will get involved in their RP and schedule trainings, small department-wide events, to get more people to go on the server even though the player count is low and offer actual promotions to ACTUAL active people etc.
Criminal departments. More involvement in between government departments and criminal departments or criminal departs and other criminal departments. This would be nice since this can form massive and fun events. For example: Terrorist Lead and Police Board together with server management agree to make an event in which the Terrorist attack the city (/advert Terror on an industrial scale) and the government issues a lockdown while they deploy all their forces to fight the terrorists off. Another example, Mafia with Police Board and Server Management plan a scenario in which Mafia higher ups and other members are brang in police cars with an escort (Because they are high risk individuals) to court and get trialed and sentenced for all the things they've done while everyone can watch.
In general, another problem is that people need to connect at the same time so we can actually have fun and RP. This can be done by @everyone pings, events and all other sorts.
To revive the server you need the "It doesn't matter that there's 3 people on, I'll hop on and see what I can do" attitude, not the "There's nothing to do, I can't do anything because there's no players, I'll go". Also, instead of getting in parties in discord of up to 10 people playing other games get in a public VC where people can join and get involved and try to play on the server. If people see 10 players on the server, they'd be more likely to join than 2 people on the server. To revive a server you can't say, you just have to wait, holidays and other stuff will probably revive the server, you have to say that I will listen to the community, give them what they want and make them happy.
These actions have to be taken fast and decisions have to be made so people actually see that the server is cared about and isn't just a dying community close to being deleted. The community needs clear answers and it needs to know the plans of the server so they are actually certain about what they're being dedicated to...
Finally, I think it's time to get rid of the high up people in every department that have that negative attitude. We need people that try their best at reviving their server and their departments, not the "+1 or -1 person online doesn't matter, this server is dead and I'm just waiting for it to die completely" attitude.
Thanks for your input im glad to see a member of the community who is willing to say it as it is, I think we can agree that BritishRP was a good idea on paper but it split the player base and now left us in a bit of a mess, From this as a Management Team we have looked at ways to hopefully bring it back and from that as you can see in the main discord we will be going to wards Florida which in my opinion was the best map XYZ was on, in terms of player count. This will mean that its our sole focus to help revive the community, Your Idea of a Community Representative is a Good idea ive seen it done before on other servers when they struggled and it helped them come back im sure this is something we can speak about as a management team. Again to anyone who wants to suggest things we can do as a community it would be much appreciated.
I remember a long time ago someone suggested opening a second server for Police RP so there can be less lag. The suggestion was denied for the reason that people and staff will be stretched into 2 servers. 6 months later they did the same thing stretching people into 2 servers and that for me is the "bullet" that killed XYZ. I mean let's be honest here after WW3 RP failed they should have known that the community plays on only 1 server. The few ways that can save XYZ are as Brexit said hosting more events so people can get back into the game, changing the map, adding a new department, or simply just giving people a discount to the XYZ website so they can buy stuff for less money, although this will mean that the income will be less. I also think that before creating servers in the feature there should be a community poll to see how many people will actually play it and be active on it.
In my opinion, British RP was the worst decision. But at the end of the day management decides what to do with the server.
Well said brexit, the servers revival is all anyone who cares wants to see, there just needs to be an initiative with the progression and frequent changes within managment decisions, now im not being toxic but its quite clear. Im sure with a bit of a content change and some attention it will be revived and live to see another couple years, peace!
It's Rob from Riverside. I played a big part in a few of the changes at Riverside including SMT. I'm aware of what went down when I left Riverside and also what happened when Riverside shut down - including what circumstances went on.
Without going into too much detail as I have respect for certain people still, opening BritishRP was thought to work because a lot of the players over at Riverside wanted realism - but I'm fully aware that the entire "active" player base - ones which were consistently recorded as involved (regardless of the effect!), were the ones who moved onto FiveM (which is a Grand Theft Auto 5 game) where it engages many of the graphical improvements Gary's Mod doesn't have.
A lot of users didn't move on from the Riverside playerbase to FiveM because they didn't have strong enough PC's. Those who stuck around from the launch of the server until the shut down have now matured enough to the age where their parents (or them) can buy a stronger PC to play GTA.
I thought I would add that those who don't play Riverside or any associated "Roleplay" games anymore have simply grown up and moved on. That's business for you. XYZ is only resistant to business changes ever so slightly because they're aware people grow up. Many desire more. There isn't enough investment in Gmod in general to make it sustainable for the long term.
Therefore, it should be said that the conclusion of you stating XYZ is "dying" isn't true. Riverside saw a similar growth August 2019; like XYZ did. Financially, that's when Riverside was at the strongest with me controlling the business and unfortunately a mixture of other events plus a aging player ase meant that there was only a matter of time before it was limited.
I'm sure things will pick up in the short - medium term if management continue to provide support. You have to remember this is a business too, so it needs to be financially stable too. You'll sense if this wasn't the case.
